What is Pathfinder LZ?
Pathfinder LZ is a planning and reference tool for personnel establishing a helicopter landing zone. You place a scaled ring on the map to mark a prospective LZ, and the app assembles coordinates, terrain and elevation, weather, obstacles, and other reference information into a standardized, shareable brief.
Pathfinder LZ displays information to support your decision-making. It does not make operational decisions — the pilot in command or qualified decision-maker retains full authority and responsibility. All data is advisory and should be verified against authoritative sources.
Frequently asked questions
How does the free trial and subscription work? New users get a 3-day free trial with full access. After the trial, a subscription is required to continue using the app: $4.99/month or $49.99/year. Subscriptions are billed through your Apple ID and auto-renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the period ends.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription? Subscriptions are managed through Apple, not within the app. On your device, open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, select Pathfinder LZ, and choose to change or cancel. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
I subscribed on another device (or reinstalled). How do I get access back? Use Restore Purchases on the paywall screen or in the app's Settings → Subscription. This restores an active subscription tied to your Apple ID.
Does the app work offline? Yes, for much of its function. Coordinates and coordinate conversion work fully offline. You can download offline map regions in advance for use without a signal. Live weather and terrain elevation require a connection; when offline, the app lets you enter those values manually and clearly indicates it is offline. A valid subscription continues to work offline.
Why does weather or elevation sometimes show as unavailable? Live weather (National Weather Service) and elevation (USGS) are fetched by coordinate and require connectivity and U.S. coverage. When they are unavailable, the app does not display a value rather than showing something that may be wrong — you can enter the information manually.
What do the coordinate formats mean? The app supports Decimal Degrees (DD), Degrees Decimal Minutes (DDM — the aviation format), and MGRS. You can set your preferred format in Settings, and the app can display and convert between them. The correct format for reading coordinates to an aircrew is typically DDM.
Is the app a certified navigation or aviation system? No. Pathfinder LZ is a planning and reference aid. It is not certified avionics, not an approved source of aeronautical information, and not a navigation system. Always verify information against current, authoritative sources and follow your training, procedures, and applicable regulations.
How do I delete my data? Use Reset App Data in the app's Settings. This permanently removes your saved landing zones, photos, notes, user/unit identifier, and downloaded offline maps from your device. Your display and operational preferences are kept.
How current is the FAA airport and heliport data? The app ships with FAA data current as of its release, and shows the data's cycle date in Settings. You can check for and download updated data manually in Settings. The app warns you when the bundled data may be out of date.
