SMS Consent & Opt-In

Apex Scout is a backcountry safety app. Users designate emergency contacts who receive SMS text alerts only if the user triggers an emergency recovery event.

How consent is collected:
When a user adds an emergency contact in the app, SMS alerts are turned OFF by default. The user must actively enable "SMS Alerts" for that contact.

When they do, the app displays the following consent confirmation:
"By enabling SMS alerts, you confirm this contact has agreed to receive emergency text messages from Apex Scout containing your location during an emergency. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out."

What messages are sent:
Recipients only receive a text message if the user activates an emergency recovery event. The message contains the user's GPS location and recovery coordinates to assist with locating them. These are transactional safety alerts only — no marketing or promotional messages are ever sent.

Opt-out:
Recipients can reply STOP at any time to stop receiving messages.
